Yes, Honduras is a solid nearshore option for US companies, with one condition: hire a managed team, not a collection of freelancers. Honduras runs on Central Time year-round, so it shares a full workday with Texas, and a programmer in Honduras earns a fraction of the salary of one in the US, where the median is about $65 an hour.
The problem? Most 2026 nearshore guides cover Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina and skip Central America entirely. We're writing this one from the inside: Andes Development has operated from Tegucigalpa since 2011, runs a sister operation in Austin, Texas, and has had a US entity (Andes Dev LLC) since 2019.
Is Honduras a good place to outsource software development?
It is when you need three things at once: shared hours with your team, lower costs than US rates, and a partner accountable for the outcome. Honduras gives you the first two by geography. The third depends on who you hire.
The advantage over traditional offshore isn't only price. It's clearing a blocker on a ten-minute call at 10 a.m. instead of in an email that gets answered tomorrow.
What time zone is Honduras in, and how much does it overlap with US teams?
Honduras is on UTC-6 all year and doesn't change clocks in summer:
| Period | Difference from Austin (Central) | Difference from New York |
|---|---|---|
| November to March | Same time | 1 hour behind |
| March to November | 1 hour behind | 2 hours behind |
Compared with a team in India, 10 to 11 hours away, the overlap is close to total. Standups, reviews, and urgent fixes happen in real time.
How much does nearshore development cost compared with a US team?
No neutral source publishes agency rates by country, so we compare what is public: salaries.
| Market | Gross annual salary | Hourly equivalent | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| US software developers (median) | $135,980 | About $65 | BLS, May 2025 |
| Programmers in Honduras (80% of cases) | L 216,000 to L 874,000 (about $8,000 to $32,400) | About $4 to $16 | Paylab |
The hourly equivalent divides the annual salary by 2,080 hours, and lempiras are converted at L 27 to the dollar.
Two honest caveats. These are salaries, not rates: whatever a vendor bills you adds benefits, taxes, management, quality assurance, tools, and margin, so a rate will always be several times the salary. And the Honduran range is wide because it mixes junior and senior profiles: team seniority moves cost more than the country does.
Hourly rate is the wrong number to compare. The right one is total cost: hours, rework, management, and what a late launch costs your business. For the full cost of a project, read how much custom software costs.
What are the real risks, and how do you manage them?
A smaller talent pool. Honduras doesn't have the engineering depth of Mexico or Colombia. If you hire individuals, replacing one can take time. A managed team absorbs that risk with process, documentation, and people who can cover for each other.
The "Phantom Programmer." That's the freelancer who disappears with the only copy of how your system works. One rule prevents it: the code lives in your repositories, the infrastructure in your account, and documentation ships with every phase.
Vendor lock-in. On our projects for US companies, systems deploy to the client's own AWS account. A Central Texas home builder, for example, ended up with a site that runs in its own account and code that is 100% theirs.
Security and compliance. If your industry is regulated, ask how the rule is enforced in the architecture, not just whether the vendor "complies." For a Texas insurance agency, we built forms that keep health information in a secure vault and never send it to the marketing CRM or the ad platform. We go deeper in what banks and healthcare organizations should require from a technology partner.
What does a nearshore project from Honduras look like in practice?
Three examples from our portfolio:
- A bilingual insurance agency in Central Texas. Bilingual landing pages, secure forms, a CRM with 15 automated workflows, and conversion measurement, live in about two weeks. Read the case.
- A Central Texas home builder. A move from WordPress to a static site: mobile performance went from 35 to 99 in PageSpeed Insights and LCP dropped from 4.4 s to 1.7 s, in two weeks. Read the case.
- A regional financial institution. Two end-to-end self-service banking flows in six weeks, built to banking security standards. Read the case.
How do you choose a nearshore partner?
Take these questions to the first meeting:
- Are the code and accounts in my company's name from day one?
- Who is on the team, and what happens if someone leaves?
- How do you document and transfer knowledge?
- Can you show production systems with metrics, not just screenshots?
- Do you have a US legal entity and experience in my industry?
If an answer is slow to come, that is your answer.
Does your project fit a nearshore team?
We work under the Sidekick model: one technology and marketing team, one invoice, and no contracts that tie you down. To find out whether your project fits, book a technical consultation and we'll give you a clear range before you commit to anything.
